Book News You Can Use 7/9/13



Sad to hear of the passing of Francis Ray.  She came to the South Carolina Book Festival several years ago, but didn't get a chance to meet her due to a work commitment.  Prayers go out to her family, friends and fans.  Articles of her passing are here and here.

One of my friends yesterday also alerted me of the passing of Destiny Smith, AKA Author MiAmor, earlier this week. She was only 18 and had already published two books.

Barnes and Noble is not having a good month.  First they decided to get rid of the Nook HD and now their CEO quits.


Speaking of Random House, their merger with Penguin became official last week.

I will be missing for a few days due to my attendance at the 51st National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.  I will at least get the summer reads listing out and have it published later in the week or early next week.  There will be a literary fair and program as a part of the convention.  Many authors will be there, including a very famous football player.  A recap of this event (as well as others I haven't written yet) will be on the blog when I get back.

2012 South Carolina Book Fesitval

Wonderful.  That is the best word I can use to describe the 16th Annual South Carolina Book Festival .  I had so much fun and got to a chance to meet (and re-meet) some wonderful authors during this two day event in Columbia.   After waking up early Saturday morning and driving about an hour an a half to the Capital City, I arrive at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.  And the first person I see when I arrived is Kwame Alexander.  And he notices that I'm wearing my Capital Bookfest tee.  I also met with my friend Valinda (who was volunteering at the festival) at the door and she took pictures.  For those who have seen these pictures on my Facebook page realize that I am not smiling in that one.  When Valinda took the other picture, it looks like I'm frowning. National Book Club Conference 2011

But now I am back (and got some much needed rest), I can tell you about the AWESOME time I had at the National Book Club Conference in Atlanta. I attended this great event with the Literary Divas of the Lowcountry, which I am a member of. I was with my friends Cat, Valinda ( who you can meet here ), Nadia, Veronica and Flashette. Here is a recap of our experience at NBBC. Thursday night: We attended the Black Pearls Magazine Chocolate Social. So we got dressed up and walked to the Westin, which is a block or two from the Hyatt, which where the conference was. 10 Best Fiction Books of 2010

As of this writing, I have read 72 books in 2010. This is about 2-4 more books than I did in 2009. Some of my friends say that this is an accomplishment, considering I am six credits shy of my Master's in Library Science, bought a house and moved out of my parents' house, working a full-time job (and for a part of this year, a part-time job on Saturdays), becoming a member of my local library system's board of trustees and being active in Delta. This year brought us a variety of books that we enjoyed, and some we didn't. We looked forward to some books by authors who had not come out with anything in years, just to be disappointed in the end. We also heard from some promising new authors that gave us some of the best books of 2010. And we also read from favorites that kept us entertained and reminded us why we read their books.
